Successful launch of Ekurhuleni’s BRT system

Ekurhuleni’s Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Roads, Transport and Planning Clr Petrus Mabunda with the MMC of Finance and Economic Development Clr Doctor Xhakaza and the executive mayor Clr Mzwandile Masina, after purchasing their first Harambee bus tickets at the Transport Management Centre in Kempton Park on February 8.

On February 8 the City of Ekurhuleni successfully implemented phase one of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Harambee project.

Ms Gugu Ndima, the spokesperson in the executive mayor’s office, said the completion of phase one was a historical day for the City of Ekurhuleni.

The phase included the testing of the buses and the route between Kempton Park and Tembisa.

The event was attended by the executive mayor, Clr Mzwandile Masina, the MMC of Transport, Clr Petrus Mabunda, the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) and the National Taxi Association (NTA).

At the event Clr Masina said many lessons can be drawn from the other cities regarding the implementation of the Ekurhuleni system.

Mr Peter Mashego of SANTACO said that the association welcomes this initiative.

“As the association, we are not here to compete with the BRT system but to complement and to ensure full cooperation for the benefit of the people of Ekurhuleni,” said Clr Mashego.

The mayor added that R800-million has been invested in the infrastructure of the project.

The next phase of the system will see the start of the project and will have 40 buses in operation in the area of Tembisa and Kempton Park.
