Edenvale man shares concern about dangers of leaking sewage

Mike Davidson points to the sewage leak. Before the leak the water is relatively brown and has some transparency. After the leak the water becomes a grey mess.

Sewage leaking into the Edenvale Spruit has a community member concerned about the well-being of local wildlife.

Mike Davidson raised his concerns after he read the two articles about the dying fish at Willow Park in Dowerglen in the May 24 edition of the NEWS.

He said sewage has been leaking into the spruit since the November 9 floods in Edenvale.

Eastleigh was one of the hardest hit areas.

Many businesses were flooded and forced to close early for the year.

For some it spelt financial disaster and uncertainty.

During the floods, a large amount of debris was carried by the water through the spruit, which runs through Eastleigh and Edenvale.

Davidson said he believes debris carried by the flood damaged the pipe.

He said he had reported the leak to the municipality but as far as he is aware, nothing has been do remedy the situation.

In an attempt to prevent further devastation to aquatic wildlife, Davidson approached the NEWS to raise his concerns.

“I don’t think anyone likes to see dead wildlife,” said Davidson.

Besides the wildlife, Davidson believes anyone who comes into contact with the water will be put in danger.

A request for comment was sent to the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality.

Comment was requested on what will be done to remedy the sewage leak and whether or not the Edenvale Spruit will be treated for sewage contamination, like Willow Park.

Comment was requested by May 29 at 9.30am.

No comment has been received.
