City of Joburg, businesses and organisations signed memorandums of understanding and pledges of support to clean the city on November 23.
The A Re Sebetseng city-wide clean-up campaign strives to encourage all Johannesburg residents to take care of the environment.
“It seeks to promote a culture of reducing, re-using, and recycling our waste to ensure that Johannesburg becomes one of the cleanest cities in Africa,” said executive mayor Clr Herman Mashaba.
Mashaba said it is the third signing of the pledge.
“I would like to thank Coca Cola, Total, Joburg CID Forum, the Miss Earth SA Foundation, Kobus Otto & Associates, Delta Bec, Tedcor, Enviroserv, Mojanation, Mpact, Interwaste, Remade, Metal & Papers, Plastics SA, Petco, Polyco, Traffic Net, Phambili Services, Averda SA, Carrus, Avis, TFM Industries, Adcock Ingam, Waohost, the Waste Group and Boitumelong for coming on board and supporting the campaign,” he said.
The campaign takes place every last Saturday of the month for 2017, but in 2018 it will be on the third Saturday of every month.
“The purpose is to raise awareness whilst educating and encouraging residents to manage waste effectively and to take care of their environment. The campaign, in line with the City’s by-laws, also aims to address issues of littering, illegal dumping, overloading of bins and the dilapidation of open spaces that usually results in the manifestation of pests.
The campaign is facilitated by Pikitup but it is the responsibility of all councillors, city departments, and regional offices to drive the programme.
Mashaba said plastic bags and gloves are distributed at walk-in centres, clinics, libraries, and participating businesses.
“Filled bags are collected on the same day by Pikitup. As A Re Sebetseng gains momentum and the City enters into pledge signing and memorandums of understanding, we are reaching more and more communities and are realising the vision of the campaign,” he said.
