Athletes flock to Bedfordview marathon

Thousands of athletes from across Gauteng participated in the recent Pick n Pay marathon.

The marathon, presented by Momentum, was held at Saheti School on February 11.

At the event, which attracted runners from Joburg and surrounding areas, athletes ran through Bedfordview and Edenvale.

Runners participated in the 42.2km marathon, the 21.1km half-marathon, as well as the 8km or 4km fun run.

For the first half of the marathon, Jeffrey Gwebu was the leader of the race.

Shortly after crossing the halfway mark, he lost his position and finished the marathon in fourth place.

The winner of the marathon was Rofhiwa Mathidi with a time of two 2:28:55.

He was followed by Jonas Makhele (02:30:49) in second place and by Kgathatso Checha (2:31:16) who came third.

The top three runners for the half-marathon were:

• Mbongeni Ngxazozo (01:06:47).

• Puleng Maeko (1:07:33).

• Sikhumbuzo Seme (01:10:17).

The top three runners for the 8km fun run were:

• Peter Mokhubedu (0:26:14).

• Tshepiso Khati (0:27:18).

• Esau Miya (0:29:09).

The top three runners for the 4km fun run were:

• Maunatlala Mashabela (0:13:25).

•Francois van Zyl (0:18:37).

•Allien Hough (0:19:30).

Dominique de Klerk, a race organiser of the event, said there were 9 500 entries for this year’s event.

“Our marathon and half-marathon entries were sold out by November last year,” said de Klerk.

“It was the first time we sold out so quickly.”

2018 marked the 35th year the event was hosted.

De Klerk said the community seemed to enjoy the day.

“All the feedback we received was positive.”
