Spokesperson for the station Captain Richard Munyai said the arrest came after a 36-year-old man alleged that he arrived at court where he was supposed to appear on a charge of common assault on January 2.

“The man was told that he went to court on the wrong date. He alleged that he was approached by the suspect on his way out. The suspect allegedly asked him why he was in court and he told him about his court appearance,” he said.

Munyai said the suspect asked the man if he had a lawyer to represent him and he said he does not have one.

“The suspect promised to represent the complainant. He then asked him for a payment of R1 500 which the complainant paid. The suspect did not arrive for the man’s next court appearance. He tried calling him but his phone was off.

“The man came across the suspect outside the court on February 21. When he asked him about his money the suspect told him he didn’t have money and asked him to go with him to the client service centre (CSC) at Jeppe where he said he wanted to make an affidavit promising him that he will pay him back his money. They went to the CSC and the suspect asked for an affidavit and pretended to be writing on it. He later sneaked out of the CSC and got into his car and drove off,” he said.

Munyai said the complainant got into his car and chased after the man until he managed to corner him.

“He took the suspect to Jeppe SAPS. Officers questioned the suspect and discovered that he is not a real lawyer. He confessed that he is not a lawyer and tried to bribe the officers. They arrested him and charged him with impersonating a lawyer and theft under false pretences,” said Munyai.

“During the preliminary investigation it was discovered that the suspect had previous fraud cases in Langlaagte and Boksburg.”

“We appeal to others who may have fallen victim to this suspect to come forward,” said Munyai.
