Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court sentenced Thando Ndlamini (32) and Mfudisi Ndlovu (39) to an effective four years imprisonment for tampering with essential infrastructure and corruption on April 24.
Spokesperson for Cleveland SAPS Captain Johan Jordaan said the two were arrested by JMPD officers in January while they were digging on the sidewalk at the corner of Jules and Marathon streets in Malvern.
“They unlawfully removed electrical cables from the sidewalk. They tried to bribe the officer with R1 000 but she arrested them.
“They were taken to Cleveland SAPS where they were detained. The other three suspects fled the scene,” said Jordaan.
Jordaan said the sentence will serve as a warning to other criminals planning to steal and tamper with electrical infrastructure.
“We will arrest them and heavy sentences will be given to them,” he said.
