The Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) fire fighters braved the cold and went swimming at the Boksburg indoor swimming pool to increase their surface water rescue skills on May 30.
According to DEMS spokesperson William Ntladi, the exercise was held to enhance the quality of life-saving techniques in water.
He said 70 fire fighters from across the City of Ekurhuleni volunteered to participate in the life-saving programme.
This was in preparation for changing weather patterns, as flooding and drowning are year-long problems.
Ntladi said the team is under the guidance of fire and swimming instructor Gerald Moswathupa.
He said this will enable the fire fighters to do swift water rescues.
