Sbonelo Gumede (31) and Mzokwane Mazibuko (35) appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on charges of intimidation, possession of an unlicensed firearm and pointing of a firearm on June 19.
The two were arrested by Yeoville SAPS at the corner of Dunbar and Bezuidenhout streets in Bellevue on June 18.
Spokesperson for the station, Capt Sifiso Mabizela said they received a call from the complainant asking them to rescue her and her friend.
“The two women got into a quantum taxi from Noord Taxi Rank to Yeoville.
“The complainant alleged that they asked the driver of the taxi how much they owed him for the taxi fare. The driver, who was with his friend, told them that the fare was R20.
“He then took out a firearm, cocked it twice and told the two women that he is taking them to his place. The women started to cry and the driver’s friend told them that crying won’t help them,” he said.
The complainant convinced the suspects that she needs to go to the bathroom.

“They allowed her to go to the toilet. While she was there, she called the emergency line 112 and spoke to officials at the station who came to her rescue and arrested both suspects who were still with the other woman inside the taxi,” said Mabizela.
The two suspects remain in custody pending their formal bail application.
