The Joburg East area celebrated June 16 in different ways.
Bertrams Junior School hosted a sports day filled with fun as learners enjoyed playing soccer, netball and athletics.
“The day was all about fun and encouraging the children to live an active life because it will benefit them. A healthy lifestyle means a healthy mind,” said principal Khanyi Twala.
The sports day was held at Athlone Boys High School where six schools participated.
“We are happy about how the day turned out. Learners had fun and that was the important part,” said Twala.
The overall winner was Bertrams Junior. Second place was taken by Eastgate Primary, followed by Troyville Primary in third place and Bedfordview Primary in fourth place.
“We would like to thank all the schools that participated and our sponsors. We really appreciate all that you have helped us with,” said Twala.
The sports day was part of Bertrams Junior School’s fund-raising project.
The Woodpecker Bowling Club on 2nd Avenue in Bez Valley celebrated the day with food.
The club held a potjiekos competition.
There were six different potjies for the day, including Moroccan lamb, Punjab beef curry, biltong, Mala mogodu, oxtail and clams.
Chef Nico from Cut and Craft restaurant in Kensington was the judge for the day.
The potjies were judged on aroma, colour and flavour.
The winning potjie of the day was Moroccan lamb by Proby Reddy.
