Petrol prices reach a high of R16 a litre this month

The Department of Energy (DoE) has announced the official petrol prices for July which will take effect on Wednesday 4 July 2018. Motorists will continue to feel the pinch as the prices reach a record high for this year. This is due to the weakening Rand against the dollar (from R12.51 to R13.29 for 1 USD) amongst other factors. This is despite Brent Crude oil prices and import prices for petroleum products decreasing over the period in review.

Since April, the petrol price has increased by 15% – up more than R2 per litre in three months.

The DoE announced that the petrol price will increase by 26 cents a litre for 93 octane, 23 cents a litre for 95 octane while diesel (0.05% sulphur) will be 26 cents per litre.

Price Adjustments:

  • 93 ULP and LRP – 26 cents per litre increase
  • 95 ULP and LRP – 23 cents per litre increase
  • Diesel 0.05% Sulphur – 26 cents per litre increase
  • Diesel 0.005% Sulphur – 24 cents per litre increase
  • Illuminating Paraffin (wholesale) – 22 cents per litre increase
  • LP Gas – 37.00 c/kg increase

In June the Automobile Association said: “With the volatility of oil markets over the last six weeks, an increase in the oil price cannot be ruled out in the short to medium term, and we once again advise all motorists to avoid unnecessary journeys, make use of carpooling, and practice economical driving techniques,” said AA.
