Edenvale robber arrested in Hillbrow

One of six suspects was arrested after a robbery at an Edenvale CBD liquor store.

Captain Jean Olckers, Edenvale SAPS spokesperson, said the suspect was arrested on July 4 by officers from Hillbrow Police Station.

He said earlier that day men threatened the owner of the liquor store with handguns and made off with an undisclosed amount of liquor and money.

“A description of the vehicle the suspects used was sent out and members of Hillbrow SAPS spotted it in Hillbrow,” said Olckers.

“Officers gave chase during which the suspects’ vehicle collided with a taxi and came to a standstill.”

One suspect was arrested, the other five fled the area.

Olckers said a handgun and ammunition were found in the suspect’s possession.

The arrested suspect will face charges of business robbery and possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.

Olckers said Edenvale and Hillbrow police stations will investigate the case together.

He urged business owners to be vigilant and alert.

“If you feel unsafe or notice suspicious behaviour phone the police or security company.”

Olckers encouraged community members who may know more about the crime to contact the police.
