Lions hope to spread their wings with new basketball court

The dream of Edenvale having its own community basketball court is slowly becoming a reality for the Edenvale Lions Basketball Academy (ELBA).

The basketball court, which will be located at the Edenvale Sports Grounds, will give the academy a home and a place for its members to practice.

ELBA currently caters for players from Edenvale, Bedfordview and the Johannesburg East areas.

Since the NEWS last met with ELBA, the court has been weeded and the trees around it removed.

However, before it can be used it needs to be resurfaced, repainted and floodlights need to be installed.

After the court has been completed the academy hopes to attract players from other areas.

Co-founders Byron Pinheiro and Edson Makavan said everything done to improve the court so far has been done out of their own pockets.

Makavan said not having a court to call home has been challenging on the academy.

“Most of our members work so we need to find a place where we can practice at night,” said Makavan.

“Having our own court will really assist us.”

In order to raise funds to make the necessary changes to the court, the academy will host a fund-raising dinner.

The dinner will be held at the Edenvale Sports Grounds on November 10.

“We have invited a number of dignitaries from the City of Ekurhuleni and ambassadors from other sporting codes,”said Makavan.

“Community members are more than welcome to attend and help us raise funds.”

Pinheiro said the court will allow the academy to spread its wings and help grow the sport nationally.

In recent months the academy has been doing well.

Pinheiro said the academy now has three national players playing for it and is sitting second on the log for the Inner City Super League FNL basketball tournament.

The Lions took second place when they beat ABA Eagles 51-44 on August 24.

Pinheiro said overall the academy has been really busy.

“For the past 10 years, we have been looking for a court to call our own. When we complete this court it will be a dream come true,” said Makavan.

“It will be the start of a legacy,” added Pinheiro.

Contact Makavan and Pinheiro on [email protected] for more information or to get involved.

The academy meets every Saturday between 8am and noon at Edenvale High School to practice.
